About Angel Millar

“Angel Millar is among a golden handful of writers who authentically and practically bridge the gap between primeval wisdom and modern spirituality.”—Mitch Horowitz, PEN Award–winning historian.

Author

I am best-known as the author of The Three Stages of Initiatic Spirituality: Craftsman, Warrior, Magician (Inner Traditions) and The Path of the Warrior-Mystic: Being a Man in an Age of Chaos (Inner Traditions).

Through my books, I explore the archetypal motivations and impulses that shape our lives. To understand our natures (and our desires) I examine ancient myths, symbols, and rites as well as evolutionary psychology, dreams, and the mind.

My first books focused on the history of important rites and symbols and their development across time. These books are The Crescent and The Compass: Islam, Freemasonry, Esotericism and Revolution in the Modern Age (Torazzi Press, and Numen Books), Freemasonry: Foundation of the Western Esoteric Tradition (Salamander and Sons), and Freemasonry: A History (Greenwich Editions/Thunder Bay Press).

My work has also been published in The Journal of Indo-European Studies, the journey of the Philosophical Research Society (Los Angeles), Watkins Mind Body Spirit magazine (UK), New Dawn magazine (Australia), and Quest magazine (USA), among others.

I also regularly give public and private talks about the subjects of my books and writing.

“…stunningly broad in-depth research both on the theoretical and on the practical level–a researcher-practitioner at his very best.”—Frater U∴D∴, author of Secrets of Western Sex Magic: Magical Energy and Gnostic Trance.

Psychopomp

A psychopomp is a guide for the souls of other people. The word derives from the Greek term psykhopompos (“spirit guide”). This term is composed of psykhē (“soul” or “spirit” (related to “psyche”) and pompos (“guide,” “messenger,” etc.).

I have practiced various types of meditation and trance techniques for three decades. My research into symbols, myths, and rituals informs my understanding of these experiences. It also informs my understanding of the human mind and spirit. In some way, this might parallel “psychology” (a term that also derives from psykhē). In other ways, it sharply contrasts with modern therapies.

I return most often, however, to the runes (ancient English and northern European symbols). In 2006, my translation of the Anglo-Saxon rune poem was published by the academic Journal of Indo-European Studies. I reference them in relation to individual purposes in our time of change and looming chaos.

Referring to ancient wisdom enables us to take a step back from the situations we find ourselves in. It gives us a different, and more perennial, perspective on life. And it can help us make difficult but necessary decisions for our personal growth.

Several years ago, I was certified as a consulting hypnotist by the National Guild of Hypnotists (USA). I work with people on a range of personal growth issues, from stress management to confidence and performance.
