Lace has a complex structure of open, netted areas (that often show the skin enderneath) and more densely woven areas for motifs (e.g., flowers).
For this dress, I was inspired by the classical Memento Mori, found in fine art and other areas of cultures during the medieval and Renaissance periods.

Featuring motifs of a skull and crossbones, hourglass, winged cherubs, flowers, and foliage, I created the pattern using Adobe software. The motifs and the underlying hexagonal netting were “repeated,” and made into a seamless pattern, to ensure that it could form the fabric structure of the dress.

The female fashion model and her back tattoo were also designed using Adobe. Using the same elements as the lace, the tattoo is striking and memorable image that shows the connection of the Memento Mori to contemporary culture.
